Casual - Later On (LP Version) (1994) sampled Herbie Hancock - Trust Me (1979)

Artist:  Casual
Song:  Later On (LP Version)
Year:  1994
Album:  A Low Down Dirty Shame OST

This song appeared on the soundtrack for the movie "A Low Down Dirty Shame" but I had the 12-inch single with Souls Of Mischief "Get The Girl, Grab The Money & Run" and Extra Prolific "In Front Of The Kids".  All three songs were on the movie soundtrack.

Artist:  Omniscence
Song:  Indeed
Year:  2014
Album:  The God Hour

Omniscence was one of those lyrical punchline guys from the 1990's whose eagerly anticipated album was shelved.  I heard the album years ago but it was released recently on a high quality version.  This song appears on an EP from late last year and he still delivers the goods as if 20 years haven't passed.

Artist:  Herbie Hancock
Song:  Trust Me
Year:  1979
Album:  Feets Don't Fail Me Now

Herbie Hancock was sampled for Casual's 2-bar baseline starting at 1:59.  Another 2-bar sample from 3:15 is heard during the chorus.

Omniscence sampled the 4-bar loop starting at 1:48.

The Beatnuts - Yeah You Get Props (1994) sampled Herbie Hancock - Toys (1977)

Artist:  The Beatnuts
Song:  Yeah You Get Props
Year:  1994
Album:  The Beatnuts: Street Level

I have been thinking about this album for the past few weeks so to follow up the last post, here is the "remix" of that song (they were both on the same 12-inch single).  This album is solid.

Artist:  Herbie Hancock
Song:  Toys
Year:  1977
Album:  V.S.O.P.

I have already documented my admiration for Herbie Hancock.  This is a long song, for true jazz heads.  I love when samples are one-time occurences in the middle of a jazz song.  It requires a good ear to find.  The sample is a 1-bar loop from 0:41.

Pëänût Bûttër Wö1f with P1änët Asïä and Mäd1ïb - Dëfïnïtïon Of I11 (Rëmïx) (1999) sampled Hërbïë Häncöck - Sûïtë Rëvëngë (1974)

Artist:  Pëänût Bûttër Wö1f with P1änët Asïä and Mäd1ïb
Song:  Dëfïnïtïon Of I11 (Rëmïx)
Year:  1999
Album:  Dëfïnïtïon Of I11 12-inch Single

This month's theme is the "suite".  A suite is a set of musical pieces considered as one composition.  This featured song sampled a suite from the Death Wish soundtrack, and is a suite itself as the beat changes.  Money Boss Players "Games" also sampled from the suite.

Artist:  Hërbïë Häncöck
Song:  Sûïtë Rëvëngë
Year:  1974
Album:  Dëäth Wïsh (Original Soundtrack)

The Hip Hop song starts with a chop of the 2 notes from 9:11 and the sample from 9:12.  The beat then changes to another 2 notes from a different song on the Death Wish Soundtrack ("Do A Thing") and the noise from 5:19.

Ras Kass - Etc. (1996) sampled Herbie Hancock - Wandering Spirit Song (1971)

Artist:  Ras Kass
Song:  Etc.
Year:  1996
Album:  Soul On Ice

Another world premier from Representative Sample.  The only reason I was able to find this sample is because I'm a big fan of both Ras Kass and Herbie Hancock.  I made the connection eventually.  I've never bought into the argument that Ras Kass is the greatest lyricist with the weakest production.  Also, sampling Buckshot Shorty on a chorus is usually a good idea:  "Pen Predator, Etcetera, Yeah Right".

Artist:  Herbie Hancock
Song:  Wandering Spirit Song
Year:  1971
Album:  Mwandishi

This song is long but a good listen.  Herbie is in outer space.  There are two samples here.  The main loop can be found at 4:59.  Right after that loop, starting at 5:02, is another loop that Ras Kass samples briefly to change up the groove (1:39 and 2:37 in "Etc.")

Show and A.G. - Got Ya Back (1995) sampled Herbie Hancock - You'll Know When You Get There (1971)

Artist:  Show and A.G.
Song:  Got Ya Back
Year:  1995
Album:  Goodfellas

Hey, CPW, remember all the Show and AG we used to listen to?  Thanks for being the first to buy this album even though I think it got stolen.  What I remember most about this record is that I was really impressed with their growth after thinking Runaway Slave couldn't be improved upon.  The samples moved away from the uptempo jazzy sound that first made them popular and towards darker moods and heavy drums.  I also remember there was a murder accusation that affected the promotion of the LP.

Artist:  Slum Village
Song:  Fantastic
Year:  1996
Album:  Fan-Tas-Tic Vol. 1

Slum Village took a different snippet from the same Herbie Hancock song.  It's the same musical phrase but found elsewhere and played differently.  Classic material.  Toronto loves Detroit Hiphop.

Artist:  Herbie Hancock
Song:  You'll Know When You Get There
Year:  1971
Album:  Mwandishi

I'm a big Herbie Hancock fan.  I saw him live at Massey Hall and he put me in a trance.  I used to loop up pieces of this record just to be hypnotized by the ethereal qualities.  The Show and A.G. loop occurs at the 8:57 mark.  J Dilla combined 2 pieces of the song.  The first two notes of the Slum Village loop appears at the 0:57 mark and the rest is at 7:19.
